Ahavas Chessed day 1838 by Eli Solomon

L'ilui nishmas Yechezkel ben Yisroel Shulem u'Zvi Yehudah ben Avraham Yitzchok A"H

Emunah and Bitachon in the Abishter is a tricky business. One has to realize that it is a life long avodah. It's not the type of concept whereby you either do or don't believe that everything is min hashomayim, and if you can't get there, all is lost. Even when you are able to say "gam zu l'toivah" or "altz is min hashomayim" one time, but not in another instance of nissayoin, you have still accomplished a lot. R' Fishel Shachter once relayed the following story. There was a Ruv who wished to have many of his important chidushim printed. The only printer was overseas, and so he asked one of the bochrim to do him a great chessed and travel by boat and deliver them to the printing press. The bochur gladly obliged, although he knew how important of a mission it was. While on the boat a violent storm hit, and although the bochur survived, the pages he was carrying were lost forever. He returned to the Yeshivah and ran to his friends. "What am I going to tell Rebbi?" The boys all got together and devised a brilliant plan to help him. The next day during shiur one of the bochrim raised his hand. "Rebbi I cannot understand the Gemmarah that says "k'sheim shemivorchim al hatoiv, kach m'vorchim al horah." "How can you possibly bench the Abishter when bad happens?" The Rebbi answered "what kind of question is that? Everything is min hashomayim. Whatever happens is actually for the good. Whatever it is!" The next boy raised his hand, and described a terrible situation, and asked "you mean I should have benched the Abishter when that happened to me?" The Rebbi answered "absolutely!" The next bochur raised his hand. He described an even worse situation and demanded a different response. But the Rebbi said "hakol d'ovid Rachmonah l'tav avid." Finally the bochur charged with the errand spoke up and said "Rebbi there was a terrible storm, and I lost all of your chidushim at sea." The Rebbi dropped on the spot. The bochrim quickly ran to try and revive him. The Rebbi finally came to, and the boys appologized profusely explaining that they were so sorry their plan hadn't worked. The Rebbi said "what do you mean? At least I woke up. Imagine what would have happened if you hadn't prepared me!" There are so many levels of Emunah and Bitachon, and it is a life long journey.  But every rung we climb is a level closer to exactly where we need to be. Chag Kosher v'someach. A git Yom Tov.
