Outward appearances deceiving Members of radical fringe Neturei Karta have no ties to any Hassidic group By Rabbi Daniel Green

So-called "rabbis" affiliated with a radical fringe group called Neturei Karta, dressed in traditional Jewish garb, rallied together with hundreds of anti-Israel protesters in downtown Hamilton this past Saturday.
The group, founded in 1938 and funded in part by various Islamic entities, is dedicated to the destruction of the Jewish state. Its members are part of a cadre of professional anti-Zionist protesters that travel worldwide to various anti-Israel rallies — Hamilton being one of its more recent stops. While the number of adherents is sometimes estimated to be in the thousands, in reality it may total no more than several hundred.
The sect, whose outward appearance is similar to many Hassidic groups, has no current or historic ties to any Hassidic group whatever. While professing to represent "authentic Judaism," these radicals have been unequivocally disenfranchised and shunned by the most religious and pious Jewish communities throughout Europe and the world.
While certain Hassidic groups maintain the belief that the establishment of a Jewish state should await the coming of the messiah, they do not support or advocate on behalf of terrorist entities determined to eradicate the Jewish state. This is precisely the policy of Neturei Karta.
In 2007, the radical group, in a well-publicized mission to Iran, met with then President, Ahmadinejad at an international conference promoting Holocaust denial, to show support for his genocidal plan to eradicate the state of Israel. In July 2013, a Neturei Karta member was convicted of spying on Israel on behalf of Iran. Most recently, the sect has been advocating in support of the terrorist polices of Hamas.
As a result, adherents of Neturei Karta are often denied entry into Orthodox synagogues, their children have been barred from Hassidic schools in Antwerp and Vienna. Hassidic Mohels have even been known to deny circumcision to their children based on the rulings of leading Rabbinic figures.
In the first century of the Common Era, an additional supplication was added to the traditional Jewish prayer service. The addendum targeted Jewish sects that spoke in the name of Judaism but were, in fact, traitors against their own community and value systems.
Unfortunately, close to two millennia later, this phenomenon still exists.
Let us be clear that the pernicious actions of this fringe group do not represent authentic Judaism in any way, nor do they represent any community beyond themselves. Outward appearances can be deceiving. In this instance, there's is simply an abhorrent perversion.
